I love a good road trip—rolling down the highway, stopping at quirky roadside diners, and exploring new places. But when I first thought about doing it in an EV, I wasn’t so sure. Would I constantly be searching for a charger? Would I end up stranded in the middle of nowhere?
At first, I was skeptical. But after taking a long-distance trip in an EV, I realized that range anxiety is mostly a thing of the past. Charging networks have expanded dramatically, with high-speed chargers now available along most major highways. Apps like PlugShare and A Better Route Planner make it easy to map out charging stops, so you’re never left guessing.

Fast-charging technology has also improved. Some EVs can now add 200+ miles of range in just 20 minutes, which means charging stops aren’t much longer than a gas station break. I used to think that stopping to charge would be a hassle, but in reality, it gave me a chance to grab food, stretch my legs, and take a break from driving.
Of course, there are still challenges—rural areas and remote locations have fewer chargers, and some charging stations aren’t as reliable as they should be. But with federal funding pouring into EV infrastructure and automakers increasing range with every new model, long road trips in an EV are getting easier every year.
So can you road trip in an EV without stress? Absolutely. Just like planning for gas station stops, you plan for charging stops. Once you get used to it, road-tripping in an EV feels just as natural—if not better—than a gas car.
